Allegri and Nedved explain why Cristiano Ronaldo was benched

Cristiano Ronaldo was benched by Massimiliano Allegri, and Pavel Nedved has reiterated that the Portuguese will remain in Turin.

Allegri started his second stint as manager by benching Ronaldo against Udinese on Sunday.

Cristiano asked to do so, according to Fabrizio Romano, as he tries to ‘find a solution’ before the transfer window ends on August 31.

However, no offers have yet come at the club’s front door.

Instead, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner came on as a 59th-minute substitute for Alvaro Morata.

He came close to scoring an injury-time winner, but a VAR review ruled his header offside.

Juventus had to settle for a 2-2 draw at Udinese as a result.

What did Allegri have to say about it?

“Ronaldo is in good spirits,” Allegri told DAZN after the match.

“I spoke with him before the game and informed him that he would be starting on the bench. He agreed to be available. When he first stepped onto the pitch, he performed admirably.”

Ronaldo will stay, according to Nedved.

Meanwhile, Juventus vice-president Pavel Nedved has downplayed the possibility of Ronaldo leaving this summer.

He stressed that the decision to sit the Portugal international was solely based on fitness concerns.

“We mustn’t strive to manufacture dramatic tales when there aren’t any,” Nedved told DAZN.

“It was a joint decision with the player. Naturally, he is not in peak physical condition at the start of the season. The coach is attempting to field the best lineup possible at this time.

“I can categorically state that Ronaldo will continue at Juventus for the remainder of the season.”
