Dolores Aveiro, Cristiano Ronaldo’s mother, was brought to tears as her son scored his 117th international goal against Switzerland in the UEFA Nations League on Sunday.
Ronaldo, 37, was at his normal goal-scoring best, netting a lovely double against a dismal Swiss team in Portugal’s 4-0 triumph.
In the 35th minute, he scored his first goal. Diogo Jota put him through on goal, and Ronaldo took advantage easily.
The Portugal captain then doubled his tally in the 40th minute, capitalizing on Gregor Kobel’s save.
Ronaldo’s mother was spotted beaming from ear to ear and crying tears of delight as her son established his worth as one of Europe’s best ever goal scorers.
Joao Cancelo and William Carvalho both scored as Portugal established itself as a contender for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year.
Ronaldo has had a rough season at club level, despite leading the league in scoring with 24 goals across all competitions.
His Manchester United team was devastated. The Red Devils finished the season without a trophy and outside of the top four.
Ronaldo also suffered the tragic loss of his young son in April. He has, however, demonstrated his genuine character and class by remaining at the top of his game.
