Cristiano Ronaldo had an unexpected encounter with a fan who ran onto the field and hugged him during Portugal’s Euro 2024 qualifying match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Saturday. The fan also lifted Ronaldo into the air and performed his iconic ‘siu’ celebration with him, before being chased away by security.
The incident occurred in the second half of the match, which Portugal won 3-0 thanks to goals from Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes (2). Ronaldo, who did not score but assisted Fernandes’ second goal, remained calm and even smiled after the fan’s embrace. He also joined him in doing the ‘siu’ celebration, which involves leaping into the air and quickly driving the hands from above the head toward the hips.
The fan, who was wearing a Portugal jersey and waving a Portugal flag, bowed down to Ronaldo before hugging him and lifting him off his feet. He then ran away from security and exited the field.
Ronaldo, who was making his 199th appearance for Portugal, did not seem to be bothered by the fan’s intrusion and continued to play until the final whistle. He also received applause from the crowd at the Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica in Lisbon.
Ronaldo is set to make his 200th cap for Portugal on Tuesday, when they face Iceland in another Euro qualifier. Portugal are currently top of Group J with three wins out of three and no goals conceded.
